What To Offer Jesus This Christmas.

What To Offer Jesus This Christmas.

I have noticed that more often than not, my children get so excited about GOING for their friends’ Birthday parties that they forget about getting them Birthday presents. Many times we have to remind them to get something for their friends or scold them for not thinking of it. I must say that my children do LOVE to give, it is just that the excitement of the party distracts them and makes them forget they need to buy gifts for the friends they are celebrating with.

The food.
They think of the “many kinds” of food they would be able to enjoy. Foods that ordinarily their Mother (that would be me; I tend to hinder them from satisfying their sweet tooth cravings) would not let them eat, she allows, because, well, it is their friends’ party and everyone is merry.
Friends.
It is interesting for me to hear our boys discussing about their friends and how they look forward to seeing and being with them. They go into details of why they like each person and I am amazed at the way our boys think and how much value they place on their friends.
Party Packs.
I hear them discussing what so and so had packaged for all children at their party and imagine what the present celebrant’s parents might be packaging for them. They let their imagination run wild sometimes and sometimes their friends would have given them a hint which further enhances their excitement.

Now this post is neither about our boys nor their friends, but I know you would agree with me that we have behaved a lot like them on many Christmases.

  • The food.
We take a good amount of time to plan the Christmas menu. We spend time shopping for ingredients, looking up recipes, digging up old traditional foods from when we were young. Some of us start planning several weeks ahead, some spend one week or few days doing intensive shopping and preparations for these meals.
  • Family And Friends.
We get excited about the people we will get to spend time with this season, some of whom we only get to see at this time of year. We look forward to catching up with them, meeting newest family members for the first time, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers/sisters-in-love.
  • Presents.
Oh the gifts! We buy Christmas gifts for our family, friends, neighbours and strangers… And we look forward to the gifts we would also receive from our friends and family. This season a lot of giving and receiving is in the air and it keeps many of us preoccupied.

We forget His gifts.
Yes, He does deserve and desire Birthday gifts just like we all do! But He deserves it even much more than anyone else in the entire universe. He was born totally for our sakes, He was born that He might die to deliver us from the power of darkness and convey us into His kingdom. Colossians 1:13

The Best gift to Give Jesus this season and always is that we obey His word. For He says He delights in obedience more than any physical gift we could ever offer Him.
So in my opinion, we should obey all His word this season and all times… especially those regarding building up His kingdom.
His last command to us besides loving our neighbours like we love ourselves is that we make Him disciples. Matthew 28:19-20 Especially since the reason He was born was to reconcile men to God.

Jesus was born that He might reconcile man to God.

Let us be part of making this happen with deliberate efforts and intentionally as our Birthday Present to Him.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 18 Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, 19 that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:17-19 NKJV

I remember reading somewhere, some time ago, something along the lines of … “Isn’t it funny how we are celebrating Jesus’ birthday, but WE are the ones getting the gifts?” It does seem a bit backwards. Merry Christmas to you and yours Ugochi!
