18 Apr Keys To Building A Successful Marriage.
To build any structure that will stand the test of time, the materials used must be of highly superior quality. Utmost care and ample time are also taken to ensure that it lasts longer than others.
It is also true that after building, from time to time, deliberate steps must be taken to maintain the building, others wise, its ability to last in beauty and strength cannot be guaranteed.
A marriage and home can be likened to a house. The quality of any marriage depends solely on what and how it is built. There are materials used to build homes that last longer than others, there are ways these materials are used as well.
Even after building, like any house, couples must take intentional steps to maintain their marriages and homes. Fix broken things, cracked walls, leaking pipes and all of such things in their relationship.
Now, when it comes to building a solid marriage, we can only look to God and His Word. Click To Tweet
After all, He created marriage and has the instruction manual on how to make it work, last, and fix it when it is broken.
Through [skillful and godly] wisdom a house [a life, a home, a family] is built, And by understanding it is established [on a sound and good foundation], And by knowledge its rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. Proverbs 24:3-4 (AMP)
Let us look at these verses in their different parts.
1. Built Through Wisdom.
According to the verses above, a successful marriage is built through wisdom. Now what is this wisdom? Wisdom according to Proverbs 9:10, is the fear of The Lord. To fear God means to reverence Him, to respect Him, to be in awe of Him…
If couples would build their marriages on wisdom; to reverence God, acknowledge Him as Lord and Master of their lives and marriages, taking His word as final in their lives and marriage, obeying His word in every regard, then they would be building their marriage to last.
So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, will be like a wise man [a far-sighted, practical, and sensible man] who built his house on the rock. Proverbs 7:24 AMP
2. Established By Understanding.
Understanding here means discretion, intelligence, skilfulness. This means understanding God’s word as it relates to marriage. Guiding our conducts based on God’s word, relating to our spouses based on God’s word and not our feelings, or emotions.
It means dealing with our spouses carefully according to God’s word, in order to maintain peace in our relationship. It means prudent conduct in your marriage.
When we do this, we are causing our marriages to be established on a sound and good foundation.
We gain understanding as we study to know God’s word when we gain insight into His Word.
The unfolding of Your [glorious] words give light; Their unfolding gives understanding to the simple (childlike). Psalm 119:130 AMP
3. Enriched By Knowledge.
…by knowledge its rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches…
What is knowledge? Knowledge is the truth of God’s word, in this regard, concerning marriage. Every man and woman should be able to access God’s word concerning marriage, collect it and store in their hearts and always remember it in their marital dealings.
Knowledge fills our marriage with precious and pleasant riches. Click To Tweet
Knowledge begins when we reverence God.
The [reverent] fear of the Lord [that is, worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome] is the beginning and the preeminent part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; Proverbs 1:7 AMP
We also gain knowledge by studying His word.
For the Lord gives [skillful and godly] wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6 AMP
As knowledge of God’s word concerning marriage in a home grows, wisdom grows as it is applied and conduct of the man/woman towards his/her spouse gets better.
To fill our marriage with pleasant riches, we must go for knowledge of God and His word.
From all the scriptures I have shared , we can agree that wisdom, understanding and knowledge all come from God. The same Spirit that was upon Christ while He was here dwells in us and we must consciously, daily, fellowship with Him so that we can manifest His wisdom, understanding and knowledge in our lives and homes.
Then a Shoot (the Messiah) will spring from the stock of Jesse [David’s father], And a Branch from his roots will bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him— The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and strength, The Spirit of knowledge and of the [reverential and obedient] fear of the Lord— And He will delight in the fear of the Lord, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make decisions by what His ears hear; Isaiah 11:1-3 Amp
In order to build an enjoyable marriage that will last and full of pleasant riches, Wisdom, understanding and knowledge must be constant in our lives and homes.

Posted at 15:30h, 20 AprilThis is one of the foundational aspects that my husband Gary and I share at our marriage workshops, Ugochi. We need more than communication tools and date nights to keep our marriages strong, fulfilling and lasting. God’s word is alive and active and I think many couples take that reality for granted. We need the power that only God and His word can provide us! Great thoughts, my friend. Hugs to you. 🙂
